Gassan Sadakatsu (1869-1943) was the eldest son of Gassan Sadakazu, a prominent swordsmith of the Meiji era. Throughout his father’s prolific career, Sadakatsu diligently served as both a devoted student and tireless assistant. Upon Sadakazu’s passing in 1918, Sadakatsu assumed leadership of the Osaka Gassan School. In 1921, he forged a significant connection with Baron Kitokuro Itsuki, then Minister of the Imperial Household, which presented him with the prestigious opportunity to craft swords for esteemed recipients, including the Emperor, the Imperial Army, the Imperial Navy, and the Imperial Family. Among his notable works are Emperor Hirohito’s Grand Field Marshal Sword (大元帥刀) and the ceremonial enthronement tachi. Additionally, Sadakatsu was commissioned to create imperial military swords (恩賜の軍刀) bestowed upon top graduates of the esteemed Imperial War College upon their graduation.
