TEGAI KANENAGA TANTO
This Tanto by Tegai Kanenaga is without a doubt a masterpiece. To begin with, it is very hard to find Tanto by the Tegai school, let alone signed ones and they tend to be signed by Kanekiyo and Kanezane. This specific piece, while not being the first generation Kanenaga, due to it being designated as made in the Muromachi period, is still not a very late example, being not made very far into the Muromachi period. Due to the Hamon still having alot of aspects similar to the earlier generations of the Tegai school, it is very likely made between Oei and Onin. The only real indicator in this tanto pointing away from earlier Tegai work is the Shirake Utsuri which is some of the most prominent and well made Shirake Utsuri I have ever seen on a sword made by the Yamato Tradition. It is interestingly, also made in a shape that was favoured by Yamato smiths for making Tanto called Kanmuri Otoshi Zukuri. It is mostly seen in the Yamato Taima school, of which a great deal of their masterpiece Tanto are made. The Nakago is in amazing shape, the mei is cut very finely with no damage to it whatsoever. The Jigane, Hamon and Deki are all of very good make showing the excellence of the Tegai school.
